This spring the Right to Build Task Force is seeking to add to the experience on its panel by recruiting more Custom and Self Build Experts.
Applicants must have a deep practical knowledge and demonstrable experience relating specially to the delivery of Custom and Self Build housing. Given our growing workload, we are particularly keen to hear from experienced professionals with skills in at least one of the following areas:
- Town planning and strategy development, particularly in the preparation of policy and development management
- Assessment of development viability and the procurement of sites
- Delivery of Affordable housing
Experts will work closely with the Task Force Director and Manager and will be appointed on a contractual basis. Experts will be expected to be available for up to 20 working days per year to advise on projects and attend two management meetings a year, although no work is guaranteed.
Maximising custom and self build demand
There are huge numbers of people across the UK who want to build or commission their own home with more than 40,000 people now registered on local authority Self-build and Custom Housebuilding (Right to Build) registers and new projects coming forward to meet this growing demand.
The Right to Build Task Force is all about unlocking that demand and helping organisations deliver pragmatic local housing solutions that are workable, effective and robust. The Task Force is an initiative of the National Custom and Self Build Association (NaCSBA) and is funded by the Nationwide Foundation with Government support. The aim of the Task Force is to support local authorities, landowners, developers and community-led housing groups with Expert advice to deliver Custom and Self Build housing at scale across the UK.
To further support its work, the Task Force is also looking to hear from less experienced individuals who can support our Experts by undertaking research and development work in the field of Custom and Self Build housing or who can undertake smaller commissions with the oversight of our Manager.
Ideal candidates might be a Town Planning or Custom and Self Build development professional or a graduate in Planning, Housing, Surveying or construction-related discipline. The work will be varied but will involve activities like gathering information on practice across the UK in relation to planning policies and decisions, Right to Build registers and noteworthy case studies we can draw on for our work.
Click here for more information on the Experts already on our panel and we have several others awaiting appointment.
To preserve the Task Force’s credibility, Experts will be prohibited from taking-up commercial opportunities on projects they have worked on for at least 12 months after they have advised on the project. Professional Indemnity (PI) Insurance is available to cover the work of the Task Force. Experts will be paid for their role at £450 per day if the Task Force is required to put PI Insurance in place and £500 per day if suitable PI Insurance is offered by the Expert. Reasonable travel expenses will also be met.
The Task Force will either pay individuals directly or their employers (depending on appointment terms). Membership of the Task Force’s Expert Panel will be reviewed annually.
On receipt of your Expression of Interest we will assess your skills and experience against our needs and be in touch.
The closing date for applications March 15th, and the Task Force will be in contact by April 5th with the outcomes.
