We (at Stoke Council) are currently looking to bring two sites forward for self build. One learning point from a previous development was the need for better co-ordination of the build out and support for the self builders. We are considering employing, probably externally to the Council, a Manager/Co-ordinator to support the self builders from the sale of the plots to completion. Has anyone got a JD or role description they can share. Thank you.

Paul- this is a new type of role so there won’t be much to go on unfortunately. Perhaps try nick.carter@plymouth.gov.uk or Charles.Acland@Teignbridge.gov.uk ; and also phillip.hulme@gravenhill.co.uk who is Sales and Marketing Director at Graven Hill development company. They might be able to point you to some JDs.

Hi Paul – I’m the Self Build Project Officer at Teignbridge. My role focuses on increasing and enabling plot delivery by working closely with departmental colleagues in planning, housing, and estates, engaging with the external sector; negotiating with landowners and developers, assisting enablers, neighbourhood planners and CLT self build groups, forming links with architects and funding providers, promoting the Register of Interest and answering enquiries from members of the public. So not quite the support role you’re looking to fulfil but email me for a copy of my JD if it helps. I’ve spent a fair amount of time over the last year attending site meetings for a community led self build for 6 dwellings (Broadhempston featured here in the Case Studies section) which identified the value of on-going support from the LA in areas including funding, planning, drainage, highways etc. Currently we’re considering the level of support required for successful delivery of plots on LA owned land and how to build the overhead into the scheme cost. The role will likely follow the European model of Buyer/Technical coach/Process advisor listed in the ‘Support and training for individuals’ contained within Briefing Notes on this site. We’ve an established relationship with an external provider of housing needs surveys so may appoint them to fulfil the Buyer Coach role with appropriate training + appoint a Technical Coach/Process Advisor for the duration of the build contract.

Paul – It would be useful to know what sort of support you found was needed. We have a dedicated Planner as well as myself in Housing Delivery and I am hoping to get a dedicated Building Control Surveyor as well. I haven’t had any problems so far with my self builders needing any more support than currently offered although this could be because they are not entirely green.
